The start of a new school year is always an exciting time, but this year our students, staff and parents are more excited than ever. Colorful yard signs on every school lawn remind us: “The future begins here…”
Large banners draped across more than 50 buildings celebrate the academic achievement of schools that met or exceeded the Ohio Department of Education’s standards on the State Report Card this year. The academic data we have received clearly indicates we are moving in the right direction.
With substantial gains in academic achievement in schools throughout our District, we are inspired to raise the bar and begin the 2009-2010 school year with even greater expectations for success.
I hope you will take time to review “A Case for Change”, a document which summarizes our enrollment trends, building capacity data, academic trends and a review of national TurnAround School strategies. The document also includes a scoring tool to determine the overall quality of our buildings and lays out a strategy for decision-making.
Our focus, as we move forward in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, will be to allow the academic program to drive all budgetary and facility decision-making. Toward that end, we will hold several community forums throughout the school year to keep our parents and community partners engaged.
I hope you will consider volunteering in our schools this year or supporting our schools, our programs and our students in other ways. Our District wall calendar has been sent to all households and continues to be distributed at numerous civic and community events to enable the greater Cleveland community to get involved and to discover new ways to connect to the CMSD school experience.
As we celebrate our continued success, I am grateful for and humbled by the extraordinary gestures of kindness and generosity that have kept Cleveland’s children learning and growing throughout the year. I am inspired by the countless, caring citizens who fill our public libraries, our back-to-school buses and Project ACT backpacks with nourishing food and school supplies for CMSD students.
This year, our corporate partners took scholarship opportunities for our students to unprecedented levels, and our growing ‘Army of Believers’ continue to play a significant role in inspiring a new generation of Cleveland youth to realize their dreams.
These extraordinary partners in education share a common belief--that each and every child in Cleveland is capable of high achievement if given a chance.
With your continued support and your commitment to the students of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, we will indeed reach our goal of becoming a premier school District in the United States of America. Eugene T.W. Sanders Chief Executive Officer
